PETITION: NO WAR OF AGGRESSION ON IRAN
October 03, 2006
Subject:
To: Senator Hilary Clinton
cc: Senator Harry Reid, Representative Nancy Pelosi, John Kerry, Joe Biden, Mark Warner
We recognize that you are the second most powerful political leader in the US today, as the leading presidential contender for 2008 and de facto head of the Democratic Party. You, and other Democratic leaders, fully supported President Bush in the lead up to the Iraq invasion, provided no objection to the failed occupation of Iraq, and suppressed attempts of Congressional opponents of the war.
In the past six months, you and other Democratic leaders, have made increasingly bellicose remarks about Iran that (1) have been counterproductive to the intense diplomatic efforts of other countries, (2) have exacerbated the ill feeling of the American public about Iran, and (3) have emboldened the Bush administration in its pursuit of military intervention. We ask that you eschew your previous remarks and instead work for a peaceful resolution of the Iran impasse, as well as for the removal of US troops from Iraq.
I am sure that you are aware that 85% of Democratic voters now feel the Iraq adventure in which you and the Bush administration involved our country has been a costly mistake. About 70% of Democrats, and 72% of the troops in Iraq, believe that all troops in Iraq should be withdrawn this year. What you may not be aware of is polling that showed two-thirds of Democrat voters agreed with a pledge to not vote for any pro-war candidates, and one-third of these voters agreed with this strongly. It not only would be strategically and morally correct to prevent further aggression in the mid-east, but would be in the political interest of the Democratic Party and its candidates.
