House of Representatives to Vote on War Funding, Again
This week there will be a vote on a $33 billion supplemental bill to escalate the war in Afghanistan in the House of Representatives.
The Senate did not accept the House version (passed without a vote on July 1st) which contained funds for unemployment and state government funding. The House will likely now vote on the Senate version of the funding bill.
This will likely mean something quite unusual: a straightforward vote in which yes means yes more war funding, and no means no new funds for the Afghanistan War.
The House was only able to pass the war funding measure last time with manipulation of the process that actually prevented a vote on the funding, only allowing a vote on "the rule" and amendments. Now, we will get a straight up and down vote and will be able to clearly identify war supporters and war opponents. This will present an opportunity to punish those who vote for war in the mid-term elections.
The anti-war, pro-peace message is clear:
Vote no on funding this escalation of war, regardless of whether it's a procedural vote, and regardless of any good measures attached to it.
